Middle School Teacher Workshop

Sustainable Polymer Engineering Research

Middle school science teachers will participate in a full time, week long in person workshop focused on learning how to integrate polymer science and engineering into their curriculum. Instructor and current high school teacher Ms. Jamie Sorrell will provide numerous hands on labs for teachers to experience and take back to their own classrooms. Teachers will create a 5E lesson plan, based on their learnings of the week focussed on polymer science and engineering. Throughout this experience, teachers will receive professional development including AI in the classroom, differentiation, questioning techniques and classroom discourse. They will create a professional network of individuals to collaborate with over the school year. Areas of exploration include:

Water Quality Waste Reduction Alternative Energy

REQUIREMENTS

  • Engage in one week (full time) of laboratory research and lesson development at USM, Hattiesburg Campus

  • Develop classroom activities/laboratory experiments/ curriculum based on summer research

  • Implement activities from the program in the Fall semester

  • Increase student awareness of current sustainability issues

Benefits

  • $750 summer stipend to attend

  • Up to $750 available in stipends for Science Saturday, Fall Classroom Visit & Class USM field trip

  • $500 for classroom supplies
